Inspiration

My inspiration came from changes and challenges girls face from childhood to adulthood.

Girls chase the idealisation of being grown up and experiment with make-up and clothing, starting from a young age, but they struggle as they grow with society’s sexualisation of the female form in negative and rebellious ways. I produced a collection to reflect the sexualisation of women and how they inwardly crave their childhood. I considered it important to ensure the collection was sustainable, as although childhoods are disregarded the clothing can be reused and not thrown away.

The materials used for the collection were 95% sustainable, with the majority being bedsheets sought from charity shops. The bedding had childhood designs and patterns, which reminded the wearer, that the childhood room and bed they sought solace in was still there for them in these more adult confusing world. The teddy bear was reflective of the comfort girls had as a child and can find in this collection, whilst crossing into a sexualised adult female which can receive wanted and unwanted attention.

I designed a collection from 95% sustainable material to reflect the change for girls to women

My collection conveys a message, the dress shows that teenage girls can be considered sluts or nuns by the way in which they dress, they can innocent as they were as children and dress like nuns, but they may have a rebellious side that sees brightness, anger, colours of all emotions pouring through them in the ruffles and flirtatious uplift of a dress. The teddy carries on through the collection to emphasis the innocence whilst crossing into sexualised bold women in their dresswear. Finally, the chaps show a cheeky and defiant women dressing as she wishes with acceptance that society will be judgemental, whilst still retaining the need for childhoods for retreat shown through the recycled bedsheets into ruffles as a place of solace for the women when she has craves those childhood moments.
